1. Silence the inner critic

We all know people that are obviously too hard on themselves and would benefit from cutting themselves some slack. But what about us? It’s harder to recognize and admit to criticizing ourselves since it’s an internal process that tends to go on automatically in the background of our minds. For many people it’s just the way it’s always been.

I just hate to see people do it, because doesn’t life throw us enough challenges already? Criticizing ourselves only serves to create our own pain and to make things worse than they have to be. It breaks down the inner spirit and causes us to become exactly what we don’t want. Self-awareness and ability to ponder ourselves is one of the distinctions that makes us human, but it can also be a curse. Can you ever imagine your household pet criticizing himself or herself? Wondering when they are going to finally get their lives together and overcome their unfulfilling kittenhood?

What can we do to cut ourselves some slack?

  • Make a decision to stop all criticism and accept yourself exactly as you are. Criticism never changes a thing. However, everybody changes. When you criticize yourself your changes are negative. When you approve of yourself your changes are positive.
  • Realize that you are not your thoughts. Just because you think it doesn’t mean it’s accurate, true or real. Self-hatred is only hating your own thoughts. Don’t hate yourself for having the thoughts. Gently change your thoughts.
  • Ask yourself who’s voice it is that is actually criticizing you. Is it your own, or a person from your childhood? The reality is many people have not yet left home emotionally since they have unhealed wounds and are still afflicted by a critical voice from their impressionable childhood’s.
  • Give your inner critic a name. Perhaps the name of the person where it originated. This reminds you that it is separate from you and helps you to counter the thoughts and minimize their impact. It’s much easier to argue with someone else who has a name than with yourself.
  • Be understanding and loving to your negatives. Acknowledge that you created them to fulfill a need. Now you are finding new, positive ways to fulfill those needs. So lovingly release the old patterns.
  • For those with a spiritual connection and agree with the statement, "We are made in God’s image and likeness". If that’s true to you, than we are amazing creations who are loveable just the way we are. We were never meant to be perfect. We you notice you’re criticizing yourself, ask yourself: "Is this how God wants me to be"? Wouldn’t God want me to own my own power and utilize the gifts he has given me to my full potential so I can carry out the special plans that he has laid out for me? If that’s the case, when we criticize ourselves we give away our power and can’t reach our full potential. It’s interfering with the plan and the waste of an investment that was made in you.
  • Praise yourself. As much as criticism breaks down the inner spirit praise builds it up. Praise yourself as much as you can. Tell yourself how well you are doing with every little thing. Tell yourself how far you have come. Use time frames and list the ways you have improved and how your life is better than it was five years ago, one year ago, 6 months ago, etc.

Just an incremental reduction in your self-criticism makes improvements in the quality of your life. Simply refuse to criticize yourself. Don’t wait until you get well, or lose the weight, or get the new job, or the new relationship. Begin now - and do the best you can!
