1. Let it go.

As a society, we seem to be chronically bothered. We consume the most number of laxatives, sleeping pills, and antidepressants of any other nation. We also have the highest percentage of people grinding their teeth while sleeping.

Why? Because we don’t know how to let things go. We hold onto things way too long. We regurgitate the same counter-productive junk inside of our minds. Often to the point where it has no value whatsoever and accomplishes nothing except to make us feel bad.

Here’s 6 things you can do to let things go:

1/ Allow yourself to express. Have you ever seen a young child skin his or her knee? Immediately after it happens the child is explosively upset. For about 5 minutes. A few minutes later you would of never known it happened. As adults, we can learn from that since we seem to subtly "churn" over situations. We’re bothered by them, but in many cases we don’t allow the pain to go through it’s natural cycle so we can be expel it from our consciousness. Heck, I’m from an Irish Catholic family and I’ve got relatives who haven’t spoken to each other for over 10 years. The best thing to do is to feel it, express it, and let it go.

2/ Reach out for validation. Make a phone call to a trusted friend. Don’t ask them to solve your problem, just to listen and perhaps say something like "I can’t blame you for feeling that way."

3/ Get physical. Exercising or doing something physical helps to release the tension bottled up in the body. One of the best things you can do is hit some sort of a bag with a stick or bat. Yes, revenge fantasies can be healthy. You can pretend the bag is whoever or whatever you want it to be. I have seen this technique work wonders for many folks struggling to let go of something.

4/ Simply ask yourself, "What is it costing me when let this person or situation have a "foothold" inside of my consciousness?" This is a powerful shift, because instead of focusing on how awful, unbelievable, and wronged you were by the person or situation you catch yourself and say, "Wait a minute, what is this doing to me?"

5/ Turn it into a game and create a competition to see who’s going to be mentally tougher. For instance, take the person who bothers you the most. When it’s 11:30 at night say to yourself something like, "I bet he or she would love it if they knew I was thinking about them right now, so I refuse to do it." Or, "If I focus on that person right now, then they win, and that’s just not worth it to me." Or, "I wonder if they’re thinking about me right now. I bet they’re not, so why should I think about them?"

6/ Insist on a high rent and a written "lease" before renting any of the space inside of your head. Sadly, many people have such a cheap rental rate that even a misinterpreted facial expression can occupy 80% of their mind for several days. It’s much better to charge a high amount of rent so only the most important things in life take up space. In addition, the healthiest folks take the time to write about the situation so it is clearly defined and understood before renting their limited space. Writing is one of the best things you can do since it organizes and clarifies your thoughts and can act as a mental "house cleaning" to consolidate the clutter. Writing someone a letter, even if you don’t intend to send it, minimizes the space they take up.

Remember, life is a temporary journey that we do not know when is going to end. Since none of us know how many moments we left on this journey we call life, be very picky about what you dwell on and what you hold onto inside of your head. Let yourself feel, go ahead and get angry, but always ask yourself "At what point is this becoming counter-productive?" Then, just make a decision to let it go. Interrupt yourself when you find you are about to talk or think about it. Just say, "I refuse. I’m not going to go there."
